The Zoom Q3 — also referred to as the Q3 Handy Video Recorder — is a digital video- and audio-recording device developed by Samson. The company released the device in November 2009. Its features include an integrated video and still camera, stereo microphone, LCD screen, memory card slot, on-board audio- and video-editing software and a headphone jack.


The Zoom Q3 measures 5.2 inches tall, 2.2 inches wide and 1.3 inches thick at its thickest point. It weighs 4.6 oz. before optional upgrades and accessories. A pair of AA alkaline batteries provides on-board power to the device, supplying it with up to two hours of video recording time and four hours of audio recording time. Samson sells the Zoom Q3 bundled with a windscreen, 2-gigabyte memory card, two AA batteries, an audio-video cable and a carrying pouch.


The Zoom Q3 has a built-in stereo condenser microphone setup arranged in an X/Y configuration to enable true stereo imaging. The device features automatic recording level adjustment during recording. When recording audio by itself, the Zoom Q3 saves audio to 16- or 24-bit Linear PCM WAV files with a bit rate of 96 kHz. When recording audio and video together, the device can also save audio to MP3 files at rates up to 320 Kbps.


The Zoom Q3’s built-in camera has a fixed-focus 0.3-megapixel CMOS sensor with 2x digital zoom. It captures MPEG-4 videos at 640 by 480 pixels at a rate of 30 frames per second. It also takes photos at a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. Samson equips the Zoom Q3 with a 2.4-inch LCD display screen with a native resolution of 320 by 240 pixels. You can edit your videos on the device itself or use the Zoom Q3’s HandyShare software to edit video files on your computer and then upload them to the Internet.

The Zoom Q3’s integrated memory card slot is compatible with SDHC cards up to 32GB in size, providing enough room for up to 16 hours of recording. Samson also equips the Zoom Q3 with an integrated speaker and a tripod mount. The device connects to a computer via a built-in USB 2.0 cable that swivels outward and remains concealed inside a slot on the device’s body when not in use.
