Make Legos Jump

Video sharing websites are full of Lego stop motion animations. Photographing Legos in various still positions then editing them together to look like movement creates the stop motion animations. It is a time consuming process but can be worth it in the end. If you want to get a Lego to look like it is jumping you can do so with any video editing equipment.

Instructions

1. Take a picture of the Lego character you want to make jump in a regular standing position. The best place to put the Lego character is a flat surface or on a Lego sheet so it won’t fall over.

2. Place a Lego brick under the Lego character’s feet so the Lego character is standing on the Lego brick. Make sure the location is the same as the location in Step 1. Take another picture of the Lego character.

3. Take a picture of the same location without the Lego character or the Lego brick in it.

4. Upload the pictures into a photo-editing program with layers. Click “Open” in the File menu to open the picture of the location with no Legos and the picture of the Lego character standing on a brick.

5. Select the the picture without any Legos in it to be the bottom layer of your picture. Click “New Layer” next to the picture to create a layer on top of that picture.

6. Select the picture of the Lego character standing on the brick and choose “Copy” from the Edit menu. Click on the picture with the layers and select “Paste” from the Edit menu to paste the picture of the Lego character standing on the brick on the layer over the picture of the location with no Legos.

7. Select the eraser tool from the tool box and erase the brick under the Lego character’s feet. The brick will be gone, but the background of the location will still be there since it is on the first layer and cannot be erased. Once the brick is erased, click the “Combine Layers” button next to the picture to combine the layers so it looks like the Lego is jumping in the air.

8. Select “Export” from the File menu of the photo-editing program. Name the jumping Lego character picture and click “Save” to save the file. Open a video-edition program and select “Import.” Select the picture of the Lego standing normally and the picture of the Lego jumping and click “Open.”

9. Place the picture of the Lego character standing, followed by the jumping Lego picture, followed by the standing character picture again in the video editor’s queue. Set the time of each photo to about ¼ of a second. When viewed together it will look like the Lego character is jumping in the air.
