Edit An Avchd File

Create a personalized movie by editing high-definition files from your digital camcorder.

The Advanced Video Coding High Definition is a file format that is associated with many popular Sony and Panasonic camcorders, but the file cannot be edited in most desktop video applications that come pre-installed on a PC. To edit an AVCHD formatted file, such as an MTS or M2TS file, use a third-party video editor that supports the high-definition video format. Depending on the software you choose, you can create a custom home movie with menus, chapters and video effects.

1. Use Windows Live Movie Maker. The desktop video software is offered free of charge on Microsoft’s website and is compatible with Windows 7. Windows Live Movie Maker allows you to trim portions of your AVCHD file, as well as add titles, captions and different animation effects to your video. After editing your video, you can use the program to burn it directly to DVD.

2. Download and install AVS Video Editor. The program is user-friendly and includes more than 300 video and transitional effects that can be applied to an AVCHD video. In addition to effects, AVS Video Editor includes a variety of editing tools that allow you to rotate, crop, mix or merge video files. You have to buy this program, but the company offers a free trial version.

3. Use VSO Software’s Free AVCHD Editor. While the software is basic, it allows you to edit an AVCHD file by removing unwanted sections. Free AVCHD Editor also allows you to merge multiple AVCHD files into one file, create custom chapters and can burn a movie directly to a DVD or Blue-ray disc.
