The “.mov” file extension is used to denote Quicktime videos. This type of video format can be viewed on a computer but not on a regular DVD player. The mpeg format is used to view movies on a DVD player. The Mplayer/Mencoder software can be used to convert .mov files to mpeg files on any Linux distribution. There are also versions of MPlayer/Mencoder for Windows and Mac OSX.

Instructions

1. Download and install the Mplayer/Mencoder software. It can be installed through the software repository of most distributions.

2. Open a terminal window where you will type the following commands.

3. Type the command “cd Video/” to change to the directory where your videos are held. Change the word “Video” to the correct name of the directory.

4. Type the command “mencoder -of mpeg -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg1video -oac mp3lame input.mov -o output.mpg” to change the .mov file to the .mpeg format. Replace “input.mov” and “output.mpg” with the name of your video.
