Convert Avi To Mpeg In Linux

The AVI video format was created by Microsoft so that videos could be played on a personal computer. The MPEG format was created by the Moving Pictures Experts Group. MPEG, or MPEG-1, is the video format used by Video CDs (VCDs). It can also be played on a computer without being burned to a CD. Linux users can convert AVI videos to the MPEG format with Avidemux, VLC or Hyper Video. Each can be downloaded and installed for free.

Instructions

Avidemux

1. Download and install the Avidemux software through the distribution’s package manager or directly from the Avidemux website (see “Resources” section for link).

2. Open the “Avidemux” program. It will be located under the “Sound and Video” section of the main “Applications” menu.

3. Click the “Open” button and choose the AVI file that you want to convert.

4. Choose the “VCD” option under the “Video” drop-down list.

5. Choose your preferred audio codec under the “Audio” drop-down list.

6. Choose the “MPEG” option under the “Format” drop-down list.

7. Click the “Save” button to start the video conversion.

VLC

8. Download and install the VLC software through your distribution’s package manager or directly from the VLC website (see “Resources” section for link).

9. Open a terminal window. The terminal window will be found under the “System Tools” or “Accessories” section of the “Applications” menu.

10. Type the command “cd Video/” to navigate to the directory where the AVI file is located. Replace “Video” with the correct directory name.

11. Type the command “vlc original.avi –sout=’#transcode{vcodec=mp1v, acodec=mpga}:std{access=file, mux=mpeg1,URL=result.mpg}'” to convert the AVI file to the MPEG format. Replace “original.avi” and “result.mpg” with the correct file names.

12. Type the command “exit” to close the terminal session.

Hyper Video

13. Download and install the Hyper Video software. It can be downloaded directly from the Hyper Video website (see “Resources” section for link).

14. Open the “Hyper Video” software. It will be found under the “Sound and Video” section of the “Applications” menu.

15. Click the “Open” button at the top of the screen and choose the AVI file that you want to convert.

16. Type a location for the converted file in the “Output Directory” text box.

17.Click on “.mpg” in the “Extension” drop-down box.

18. Choose your preferred video encoder under the “Encoder” section.

19. Click the “Create Command” button to view the command that will be used.

20. Click the “Convert” button to convert the video.
