Become A Photoshop Photo Restoration Expert

Photo restoration as a profession can be both financially rewarding and enjoyable. And the demand for such services is likely to continue growing, as more and more of the photos taken over the last few decades succumb to fading and decay. If you want to get involved in the world of photo restoration, you will need to become an acknowledged expert.


1. Read the literature on the subject. A short list of the books you would want to read includes, but is not limited to, “Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching” by Katrin Eismann and Wayne Palmer (2006), “Photoshop CS3 Restoration and Retouching Bible” by Mark Fitzgerald (2008), “Photo Salvage with Adobe Photoshop: Techniques for Saving Damaged Prints, Slides and Negatives” by Jack Drafahl and Sue Drafahl (2003), and “Photo Retouching & Restoration for Dummies” by Julie Adair King (2002).

2. Take courses at your local college or community college in use Photoshop. And while the more general Photoshop courses will be valuable, many schools also have courses specifically geared toward restoration or retouching. There are also full DVD courses on photo restoration that you can buy online (see Resources).

3. Become an Adobe Certified Expert. Make sure that the certification you get covers Photoshop. While the tests are difficult, getting this certification from Adobe will assure anyone you work for of your expertise in the program (see Resources).
