Avi To Mpeg With Avidemux

Avidemux is a free, powerful video editor and encoder that supports many different file types, including DVD video, AVIs and MPEGs, among others. Users can set up and automate specific types of conversions to perform with several files to avoid spending time setting up each conversion. Avidemux supports converting to MPEG format for putting on a DVD, as well as AVI to MPEG-4 conversions for those who want to play back their video on their computer or on a portable media player.


1. Launch your Web browser and visit the main download page for Avidemux (see Resources). Click the correct download link depending on your computer‘s operating system and wait for your download to finish. Double-click the “.exe” installation file to install the program. Agree to the licensing terms and launch Avidemux.

2. Click “File,” then “Open” at the top of your screen to open a pop-up Windows Explorer screen. Browse your computer’s hard drive for the AVI you want to convert and click “Open.”

3. Navigate to the bottom of your screen and locate the “Format” drop-down menu. Select one of the MPEG output options, depending on your needs. For example, if converting to MPEG to put on a DVD, select the “MPEG PS A+V” option. You may also choose an MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 output.

4. Click the “Save” button at the top of the screen. Enter your file name and choose a save location on your computer. Click “Save” to begin the conversion.
